Coffee corner

  • It's actually a seed

Coffee “beans” are the seeds of a small red fruit called the coffee cherry. Most cherries hold two seeds; a single round one is called a peaberry.

  • Arabica vs. Robusta

Arabica is sweeter and more aromatic and makes up most of the world's coffee. Robusta is hardier and more bitter, with roughly twice the caffeine.

  • Kapeng barako

The Philippines' own barako is a Liberica coffee from Batangas and Cavite — big, bold and smoky, and a rare species worldwide.

  • The Bean Belt

Coffee grows best between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, where it's warm, wet and often high up in the mountains.

  • Roast changes the taste

Light roasts keep more of a bean's fruity, origin flavours; dark roasts taste toastier and more bitter. Caffeine differs only a little between them.

Just for fun — not medical advice. Everyone reacts to caffeine differently. · Photo credits
